Tata sells 3,000 Tiago and Tigor CNG cars in less than a month

Soaring fuel prices in the country have prompted automakers such as Tata to foray into new areas of producing cleaner alternative fuel vehicles. The country’s second-largest automaker first conquered the electric vehicle space and is now stepping into a cleaner, greener alternative to fossil fuel vehicles with its Tiago and Tigor CNG models.Launched in the first month of 2022, the CNG duo from Tata has garnered more than 3,000 sales. The company also reported that CNG variants of these models accounted for 42% of total Tiago and Tigors sales in the country.
January 2022 was the most successful year for passenger car sales, according to Tata Motors, which reported total sales of 40,777 units. The automaker further said that it sold 28,108 SUVs and 2,892 electric vehicles, and it also revealed that the Punch and Nexon both sold more than 10,000 units per month.Tata Motors also announced that its Pune plant hit a record monthly output since March 2007, while its Ranjangaon plant hit an all-time high.
Tiago iCNG is available in four variants, namely XE, XM, XT and XZ+, while Tigor iCNG is only available in XZ and XZ+ variants.Tata Motors says they have retuned the suspension and the engine has been tuned for a lower end grunt.According to the manufacturer, these vehicles can climb hills without switching to gas mode.CNG cylinders and other components add 100kg to the vehicle’s weight. But Tata made sure the ground clearance wouldn’t suffer too much. The Tiago iCNG has an unladen ground clearance of 168mm, while the Tigor iCNG has a ground clearance of 165mm.
For additional safety on the iCNG Tata models, the company outfitted the vehicle with leak detection, high-quality stainless steel, and rust and corrosion-resistant materials. On top of that, Tata has added thermal accident protection, where the CNG supply to the engine is automatically cut off and the rest of the gas is released into the atmosphere. Also, if the fuel cap is open, the car won’t start.iCNG vehicles can also start in CNG mode that other CNG vehicles cannot.
The new Tata Tiago and Tigor CNG are powered by the same 1.2-litre Revetron petrol engine as the standard vehicle, but tuned to support CNG refuelling. The CNG variant of the Tata duo produces around 73PS and 95Nm of torque, which is slightly lower output than conventional fuel vehicles. The CNG vehicle comes with a 5-speed manual transmission and according to Tata Motors has a mileage of 26.49 km/kg.As for the pricing of the vehicle, the Tiago CNG starts at Rs.Rs 6.09 lakh ex-showroom while the Tigor CNG is priced at Rs.769,000 ex-showroom.
